Are Cute Squirrels a Menace?
Recently a member sent me a photo from her top floor stairway of a very cute squirrel retrieving his buried peanut from the owner’s flower pot. I thought this was a very cute picture. In mentioning this to other residents, they did not think it was cute, but more like a menace.
Protecting Flower Pots
As the story goes, several members are having their flower pots torn up by squirrels. One resident has resorted to putting heavy rocks around their flower pots to discourage them. Others have complained about their balcony or patio dog beds and Christmas tree light ripped apart in pieces by squirrels looking for anything they can eat. Even if the lights were powered on, they have tried to gnaw them.
Feeding the Animals
But other residences think the squirrels are really cute and have been feeding them peanuts unaware of the havoc they are inflicting on their neighbors` patios and balconies. Feeding squirrels will encourage more squirrels. ■
Editor Notes:
- For you real sadist, you can buy an inexpensive squirrel feeder on Amazon to see how popular you can become with your neighbors.
- Harbour Vista News would like some more pictures of the wildlife at Harbour Vista. I am particularly interested in a picture of the Raccoons that swim our streams at night.
